#OccupyMarines are Preparing to Occupy America Nationwide

#OccupyMarines are Preparing to Occupy America Nationwide: "United States Marine Corps. Sergeant Shamar Thomas in a spectacular moment defended the protesters of Occupy Wall Street while staring into the faces of thirty NYPD officers, and now countless other Marines have organized in an amazing show of solidarity.

Sgt. Thomas’ gallant actions in standing up for American citizens being brutalized by the police were shown in a video which has gone viral with almost 2 million views. Marines have joined forces with #OccupyMarines in solidarity with the movement not just in New York, but nationwide:

“OccupyMARINES Are Currently Assessing The Current Situation To Ascertain What Is Currently Needed To Support OWS America. We Are Humbled At The Substantial Support OWS America Has Provided And Ask That Everyone Continue As You All Do While We Implement Organization Nationwide. As We All Know, ‘Occupy’ Groups Are Being Established Even Now And Would Like To See This Trend Continue...."

The $1 Trillion Student Loan Rip-Off: How an Entire Generation Was Tricked into Taking on Crushing Debt That Just Enriches Banks: "USA Today says that at some point this year, student loan debt will exceed $1 trillion, surpassing even credit card debt. Felix Salmon says the number is closer to $550 billion. Either way total student loan debt is rising as other debts have tailed off. Delinquency has increased, too, since the height of the financial crisis.

0.5% Own Almost 40% Of World’s $231Trillion Dollars Of Wealth

0.5% Own Almost 40% Of World’s $231Trillion Dollars Of Wealth: "This report by the Business Insider is absolutely fascinating. This shows massive income inequality, not only in the U.S., but around the world. According to this report the global wealth is now $231 TRILLION dollars, with .5% own almost 40% of it.

Now, we all know where wealth is created. It is NOT created on the trading floors of Wall Street. Wealth is created by production, Wall Street is just the investors. Wall Street invests in wealth creation, and when production becomes too expensive in a country, they push the corporation to increase their dividends by outsourcing our jobs.

The fact that half of one percent own almost 40% of all wealth means, the rest of us are not receiving the fruits of our labor. If the economy grows by one dollar, but 40 cents is kept by 0.5% of the population, how does that increase economic growth?..."

Five Reasons Why "Teach Women Self-Defense" Isn't a Comprehensive Solution to Rape

Five Reasons Why "Teach Women Self-Defense" Isn't a Comprehensive Solution to Rape: "Before I start this post in earnest, I want to make it clear that I am not suggesting that women should not take self-defense courses, that women should not get involved in martial arts, or that there's no such thing as a woman who has successfully defended herself against assault, sexual or otherwise. What this post is intended to address is the exceedingly common recommendation in rape threads that women should "learn how to protect themselves" as the (one-and-only) solution to rape, and the equally frequent comment that people have enrolled their daughters in martial arts classes so they "will know how to take care of themselves."

Self-protection is, at best, one part of a comprehensive solution to rape—and it's not even as straightforward as it may seem. Looking at the complex and practical realities of what teaching women self-defense in regard to rape prevention really means is the focus of this post...."

Angel Food Ministries closes operations after 17 years

Angel Food Ministries closes operations after 17 years: "A giant in the U.S. affordable food distribution system has stopped operations. Angel Food Ministries (AFM) had provided affordable food to more than 45 states. The increased price of fuel and food, along with a growing number of customers who were unable to pay, contributed to a decline in sales.

Angel Food Ministries was a non-profit, non-denominational organization, dedicated to providing food relief and financial support to communities throughout the United States. While Atlanta was their home base, boxes of food purchased at affordable prices were distributed through local sites across the country...."

We Have a First Amendment Right to Protest -- So Why All These Arrests Around Occupy Wall Street?

We Have a First Amendment Right to Protest -- So Why All These Arrests Around Occupy Wall Street?: "Many of those detained won't face charges, but the arrests take them off the streets.

On Saturday night, 175 members of Occupy Chicago were arrested after refusing to comply with a curfew the city had imposed on Grant Park. According to In These Times editor Joe Macaré, the arrests took place “one by one, and by all accounts as peacefully as possible.”

It wasn't such an orderly process in New York. Allison Kilkenny reported for the Nation that “what unfolded [on Saturday] was a dramatic confrontation between the NYPD and protesters in which individuals were almost mowed down by police motorcycles, nearly trampled by horses, and ultimately ninety-two activists were arrested.”..."

GOP Senator Pushes Radical Bill To Restrict Discussion Of Abortion Over The Internet

GOP Senator Pushes Radical Bill To Restrict Discussion Of Abortion Over The Internet: "Instead of focusing on job creation, congressional Republicans have spent their time passing socially conservative legislation like the “Let Women Die” bill that would allow hospitals that receive federal funds to deny women life-saving abortion procedures.

Now Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), one of the most die-hard anti-choice lawmakers, has jumped on the bandwagon by sneaking a radical anti-abortion amendment onto a completely unrelated piece of legislation. DeMint’s amendment would ban women and their doctors from discussing abortion over the Internet..."

What's Wrong With Wall Street And Today's GOP In One Picture

Republicans Continue To Squander Taxpayer Money And Blame Obama

Republicans Continue To Squander Taxpayer Money And Blame Obama: "Any business owner knows that inventory reduction, advertising, and transportation expenses should be scaled back to avoid bankruptcy before eliminating debt collections and customer service. Republicans are fond of promoting government as a business, and in the last ten years have proven themselves to be horrible at rudimentary business acumen because they have deliberately reduced revenue while increasing spending on frivolous items such as entitlements for the oil industry, corporations, and the wealthy. It is no secret that Republicans opposes taxation and big government as a matter-of-course, and their tax-abhorrence has led to America’s economic stagnation and problems funding social programs that nearly all Americans depend on. Now, Republicans have continued their anti-tax campaign to include cutting the Internal Revenue Service’s budget for fiscal year 2012 and have left some Democrats with little choice but to go along with their ridiculous plans....'

House GOP Won’t Allow Jobs Bill Vote But Spends Taxpayer Cash Defending DOMA

House GOP Won’t Allow Jobs Bill Vote But Spends Taxpayer Cash Defending DOMA: "During the campaign for the 2010 midterm elections, Republicans stressed that their focus in the 112th session of Congress would be jobs, jobs, jobs, and in keeping with their predilection to lying, they have not made any effort to create jobs or help the economy. What they have done for nine months besides kill jobs and damage economic recovery is obey one of their two masters with religious fervor reminiscent of Islamic extremists in Afghanistan. The GOP has faithfully complied with the Koch brothers’ libertarian mandates, but their corporatist agenda takes a backseat to their work for evangelical Christians.

There is an absolute connection between the Republicans’ Draconian spending cuts and evangelical Christians that was briefly commented on yesterday in this column, but beyond cutting services and programs that assist the poor, children, and elderly Americans, there has been a decidedly focused effort to enforce biblical edicts on the entire country. Earlier this year, Republicans attempted to redefine rape in order to restrict victims of sexual assault from getting abortions. Republicans are still attempting to defund and eliminate Planned Parenthood regardless that federal law prohibits any federal money from being used for abortion services, or that only 3% of their services was for abortions. A couple of days ago, the House passed a bill that restricts private insurance from offering abortion services in a move to ban the legal medical procedure at the behest of Catholics....."

And people are worried about a Muslim take over. Muslims don't scare me. Christians scare me.

“Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites. To support roguery and error all over the earth.”

Bishops Are Behind the 'Let Women Die' Act and the Push Against Birth Control--Even As They're Under Fire for Sex Abuse Scandals

Bishops Are Behind the 'Let Women Die' Act and the Push Against Birth Control--Even As They're Under Fire for Sex Abuse Scandals: "The first bishop in the US is indicted for child sex-abuse coverup; meanwhile, his colleagues push for laws that will intrude on our sexual freedom.

Last week, the House's passage of the now-notorious H.R. 358 -- also known as the "Let Women Die" bill -- caused deserved outrage. But the bill's connection to the high-ranking Catholic group that fought for its passage, even while the American church is fighting a horrific new sex abuse scandal, hasn't been given the attention it deserves.

The new bill (which the president has vowed to veto) would essentially obliterate abortion coverage by both public and private insurers, and most egregiously get hospitals off the hook for refusing to perform abortions for women whose lives are in immediate danger. It would literally allow hospitals to let women die with impunity...."

I'm really sick of this War on Women. We really need more women in office or at least more people with feminist views. Banning contraceptive and procedures that will save lives is absolutely disgusting. And the fact that the church that has hundreds of cases of child abuse cases is pushing for this is absolutely disgusting. I also don't like having religion shoved down my throat so they really need to back the fuck off.

Rewriting the Gospel

One Month In, Occupy Wall Street Protesters Appear Poised to Change US Politics

One Month In, Occupy Wall Street Protesters Appear Poised to Change US Politics: "What a difference a month makes. Not only has OWS survived, it has captured the imagination of multitudes of embittered Americans.

Late last month, a ragtag group of several hundred liberal activists ventured to the centre of America's economic universe – Wall Street – to protest against what they saw as the country's growing income inequality and the stranglehold of corporate money over US democracy. The Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement hoped to attract thousands of protesters, but the turnout ended up being disappointingly smaller. Coverage of the protests was largely restricted to liberal media outlets and a snarky piece in the New York Times captured the sentiments of many when it dismissed them as "carnival" and "street theatre". One could be forgiven for dismissing the demonstrations as simply another failure of progressive populist politics in an era where populist energy is generally restricted to the anti-government, conservative right.

What a difference a month makes. Not only has OWS survived, it has captured the imagination of multitudes of embittered Americans. It has become a national force with the very real potential to roil American politics fundamentally. Other groups have sprung up in cities across the US and are now branching out internationally, including London....:"

Amazing Facts About Zuccotti Park

Occupy Wall Street Wins Converts, Flummoxes Cops on Global Day of Protest

Occupy Wall Street Wins Converts, Flummoxes Cops on Global Day of Protest: "The flat-foots were caught flatfooted as Occupy Wall Street marchers took to the streets of New York City.

They looked like a small army. Just a few short blocks from Liberty Plaza, where a four-week occupation has spawned the beginnings of a new mini-society, the opposition was gathering. Unlike Occupy Wall Street, this “rally” had no drum circles and no people’s kitchen. They carried no signs and chanted no slogans. What they had were weapons, vehicles and a cohesive look. A not-so-thin blue line, punctuated by white-shirted superiors, carrying out their own occupation with no threat of eviction.

Clustered around the Church of Saint Peter, the New York City Police Department had created a staging ground for the day’s actions. Six NYPD buses, the kind often used to cart mass arrestees to jail, were parked in the vicinity, along with 15 scooters, 12 police vans, two marked and several unmarked SUVs and squad cars, several flatbed trucks overflowing with metal fences, and a bus-sized command unit. More than 70 cops milled around on the street, talking, texting and listening to briefings. Just like at Liberty Plaza, there was energy in the air, but here it was a nervous kind....."

The War On Women

The War On Women: "I'm not going to say a great deal about these entries, because they make me so angry I'm afraid I'll start to speak in tongues. I used to think the line "the War on Women" was hyperbole, meant to make us sit up, be scared, and send our book money to NOW or NARAL. Today? Today I hear bullets in the shape of vicious legislation flying. Bad people want to strip us of our rights, folks. What's next: women can only work in the home? I

Amendment 26. This is . . . truly frightening. In the Mississippi legislature a movement is afoot to make life a legal construct that begins at--fertilization. This is not a joke. I spent a good chunk of today searching the Intertubes because I was positive it had to be a foolie, in part because I could find no mention of it on the main pages for NOW and NARAL. The whole subject is operating under the radar, which is nervous-making, because the people who support this say they have petitions ready for a lot of other states. Because they say they had 30,000 signatures more than they needed to get this on the fall ballot. Because they say they can use this to overturn Roe v. Wade...."
