"If the United States is supposed to uphold "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" how can a sick or dying person without health care have these rights."
~Motivated In Ohio
"Any health care funding plan that is just, equitable, civilized and humane must - must - redistribute wealth from the richer among us to the poorer and the less fortunate. Excellent healthcare is by definition re-distributional."

5 Important Lessons from the Komen/Planned Parenthood Fiasco (Don't Mess With Women's Health)
5 Important Lessons from the Komen/Planned Parenthood Fiasco (Don't Mess With Women's Health): "The big win here is that an anti-choice power play failed in the court of public opinion.
What a week it's been for the pro-choice community.
On Tuesday, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the largest breast cancer charity in the country, announced that it planned to impose new funding criteria under which Planned Parenthood would no longer be an eligible grantee. Over the next several days, pro-choice activists and women's health supporters across the nation fought back against what all signs pointed to being a politically motivated attack on Planned Parenthood and the women it serves. Finally, on Friday, all the tweets, Facebook messages, blog posts, and articles pointing out Komen's hypocrisies and misdeeds paid off, and Komen backed down (sort of), announcing that it would tweak its new funding criteria and "continue to fund existing grants, including those to Planned Parenthood."..."

Christian Bookstore Stops Selling Bible Because Proceeds Support Cancer Research, Cite Link To Planned Parenthood
Christian Bookstore Stops Selling Bible Because Proceeds Support Cancer Research, Cite Link To Planned Parenthood: "LifeWay Christian Bookstores is “one of the world’s largest providers of Christian products and services” including church literature, music, video recordings, church supplies, and of course bibles in hopes of “providing biblical solutions for life.” But one Bible didn’t meet their “biblical” standard and was subsequently pulled from the shelves. Why? Because it helped raise money for breast cancer programs.
For every copy of this particular Bible that was sold, $1 dollar from the sale went to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, a breast cancer charity well-known for organizing “Race for the Cure.” The foundation, in turn, donates some of its funds to breast cancer health programs sponsored by Planned Parenthood. Because the religious right views Planned Parenthood as the pinnacle of abortion evil, LifeWay immediately said they had “made a mistake” in selling the Bible and pulled it from the shelves...."

Air Too Dangerous to Breathe: How Gas Drilling Can Turn Rural Communities Into Industrial Wastelands [With Photos]
Air Too Dangerous to Breathe: How Gas Drilling Can Turn Rural Communities Into Industrial Wastelands [With Photos]: "Drilling is just the tip of the iceberg. Compressor stations have been associated with significant headaches, bloody noses, skin lesions, blisters, and rashes.
The exploding faucet may have launched the movement against fracking, but it's the unsexy compressor station that is pushing it to maturity.
Last week, more than a hundred activists from Pennsylvania and New York, including actor Mark Ruffalo, brought thousands of gallons of drinking water to 11 families in Dimock, Pa., who had been left dry after Cabot Oil and Gas stopped their water deliveries...."

Who's Winning the War on Abortion, Birth Control, and Sex?
Who's Winning the War on Abortion, Birth Control, and Sex?: "In the last year, the anti-abortion movement has become more open about its antiwoman, anti-sex goals--and the pro-choice movement has found some unlikely allies.
This was the year politicians and women’s groups started using “war on women” to refer to the Republican obsession with regulating uteruses. So if it’s a war, who’s winning?
The answer, frustratingly, is no one. This year saw the cementing of a consensus that neither side particularly likes: Abortion is still legal, but Republicans are doing an ever-better and more innovative job of making it as odious, expensive and shaming as possible to obtain. Although every side needs a sense of urgency to rally the troops, the good-ish news is that the federal court system helped hold back the tide on the worst laws. And for better or worse, anti-choicers got more honest than they’ve ever been about their hostility to birth control, which is used and supported by the vast majority of Americans..."

The Pill: Not Just For Pregnancy Prevention
The Pill: Not Just For Pregnancy Prevention: "Well, here's another twist in the debate over whether birth control is an essential health benefit. More than 1.5 million American women use birth control pills for reasons other than preventing pregnancy, a new analysis finds.
The nonprofit Guttmacher Institute, using federal survey data from the National Survey of Family Growth, found that 14 percent of pill users said they were taking the medication for a purpose other than contraception.
The pill users include an estimated 762,000 women who've never had sex. Ninety-five percent of them cited reasons other than birth control for their use of the pill...."

Bishops Are Behind the 'Let Women Die' Act and the Push Against Birth Control--Even As They're Under Fire for Sex Abuse Scandals
Bishops Are Behind the 'Let Women Die' Act and the Push Against Birth Control--Even As They're Under Fire for Sex Abuse Scandals: "The first bishop in the US is indicted for child sex-abuse coverup; meanwhile, his colleagues push for laws that will intrude on our sexual freedom.
Last week, the House's passage of the now-notorious H.R. 358 -- also known as the "Let Women Die" bill -- caused deserved outrage. But the bill's connection to the high-ranking Catholic group that fought for its passage, even while the American church is fighting a horrific new sex abuse scandal, hasn't been given the attention it deserves.
The new bill (which the president has vowed to veto) would essentially obliterate abortion coverage by both public and private insurers, and most egregiously get hospitals off the hook for refusing to perform abortions for women whose lives are in immediate danger. It would literally allow hospitals to let women die with impunity...."
I'm really sick of this War on Women. We really need more women in office or at least more people with feminist views. Banning contraceptive and procedures that will save lives is absolutely disgusting. And the fact that the church that has hundreds of cases of child abuse cases is pushing for this is absolutely disgusting. I also don't like having religion shoved down my throat so they really need to back the fuck off.

Which State Is Winning the Race to the Bottom to Become the Worst Place for Women?
Which State Is Winning the Race to the Bottom to Become the Worst Place for Women?: "The war on women remains in full swing. Which state has become the worst for reproductive rights?
Every day, it becomes a little bit harder for women to get the health care they need in America, particularly if that health care has anything to do with sexual and reproductive health.
The "war on women" began almost the moment that 2011's new class of legislators took their oaths of office, and it's still going on as we speak. Anti-choice groups have successfully created blueprint legislation for waiting periods, parental consent laws, mandatory ultrasounds, and targeted regulations of clinics. These kinds of laws have been passed in statehouse after statehouse....'

The Rich Get Richer, and the Poor Get Shorter Life Spans
The Rich Get Richer, and the Poor Get Shorter Life Spans: "Three-plus decades dominated by the GOP philosophy of trickle-down economics, tax cuts for the rich, and corporate welfare has resulted in a growing disparity between the rich and poor in this country–and a growing disparity in the life expectancy between the two classes.
In other words, the rich get richer, and the poor get to die earlier...."
