Caught on Camera: 10 Shockingly Violent Police Assaults on Occupy Protesters

Caught on Camera: 10 Shockingly Violent Police Assaults on Occupy Protesters: "Probably 97 percent of police act professionally toward protesters. But the other 3 percent are armed and dangerous, and know that they're unlikely to be held accountable.

Occupations across the country have born the brunt of some violent police tactics, and in a world where everyone has a camera-phone, a lot of their brutish behavior has been caught in photographs and on video.

Police work is difficult and dangerous, and the majority of officers on the street behave like pros. When it comes to controlling crowds of angry protesters, they're often put into tense situations and ordered to do things they may not want to do by commanders who are far removed from the scene. I've witnessed a lot of restraint from cops, which of course doesn't make the news....."

Open Letter to that 53% Guy

Open Letter to that 53% Guy: "Hello,

I briefly visited the “We are the 53%” website, but I first saw your face on a liberal blog. Your picture is quite popular on liberal blogs. I think it’s because of the expression on your face. I don’t know if you meant to look pugnacious or if we’re just projecting that on you, but I think that’s what gets our attention...."

Is the US Getting Domestic Indefinite Military Detention for Thanksgiving?

Is the US Getting Domestic Indefinite Military Detention for Thanksgiving?: "A bipartisan group of senators is poised to force through dramatic changes to how the US government handles suspected terrorists—over the objections of the White House and Senate Democratic leadership.

Legislative language that emerged from the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday afternoon would mandate the automatic, indefinite military detention of noncitizens apprehended in the United States who are suspected members of Al Qaeda or associated groups. The wording, which is part of a must-pass bill to fund the military, also appears to allow the indefinite military detention of citizens and legal permanent residents. The bill would also extend restrictions on transfers of detainees from Guantánamo Bay, though only for one year...."

Seattle Police Pepper Spray 84-Year-Old Activist, Priest, Pregnant Woman, Among Others

Seattle Police Pepper Spray 84-Year-Old Activist, Priest, Pregnant Woman, Among Others: "Occupy Seattle, while demonstrating in solidarity with the besieged protesters in New York City, faced a volley of indiscriminate police pepper spray last night. As protesters neared a busy street, police suddenly hit a large number of protesters — including an 84-year-old woman, a pregnant woman, a priest, and several teenagers — with mace. Dorli Rainey, the elderly activist stung in the face by law enforcement, was saved by a veteran who came her aid in the midst of the confusion in the crowd....."

Message to Occupiers: Stay Strong -- They Can't Beat Down Hopes, Dreams and the Fight for a More Humane World: "There is a long road ahead, but every obstacle overcome leads to a better tomorrow. We just have to refuse to take no for an answer.

Who knew, or could even imagine, that in such a short time, the Occupy Wall Street movement would inspire a striking transformation of public consciousness, capturing the imagination of the country and the globe, and fundamentally changing the public discourse? And it's just the beginning...."

'A Death Spiral' for the US Postal Service?

I was at the post office today for about 10 minutes. There were at least 10-15 people there while I was there. And people we're constantly coming and going. To me, it seems like the USPS is still going strong. And the would be if Congress didn't make the stupid choices that they did to kill the USPS. We need to stand up for the USPS!

Bloomberg Lied: Thousands Of OWS Library Books Missing, Feared Destroyed

Bloomberg Lied: Thousands Of OWS Library Books Missing, Feared Destroyed: "An updated post from the Occupy Wall Street Library reveals that there are thousands of books missing. Only 25 boxes of books have been recovered so far, and many of those are destroyed.

The OWS library people who have been to the garage where their property was supposedly being safely stored are reporting that it looks like the Mayor’s office lied about the status of their property. According to the Occupy Wall Street Library, “There are only about 25 boxes of books; many of the books are destroyed. Laptops here but destroyed. Can’t find tent or shelves.” Another report, “Many books destroyed. Most equipment -and structures missing. . . most of library is missing (ALL of the reference section btw), damaged or destroyed...."

You Might Be A Fascist If…

Are you a fascist? Many people are fascists and they don’t even realize it. And sometimes, they know it all too well, but hide and deny it. Most of the time though, it’s obvious who the fascists are. For instance, you might be a fascist if…

1. You are obsessed with national power and pride and believe your country doesn’t have to follow the rules and shouldn’t ever apologize for doing things that are wrong. You think your nation can do whatever it wants.

2. You believe in the rule of the few, election rigging, political decisions being made by a select group of officials behind closed doors, embrace the informal and unregulated exercise of political power, arbitrary deprivation of civil liberties, and little tolerance for meaningful opposition.

3. You believe in survival of the fittest, an every man for himself mentality that causes you to believe that poor people and sick people are weak and must be punished. You think rich people are strong because they are wealthy and that they should rule us. You also believe your race is superior to all others.

Beating Babies in the Name of Jesus? The Shady World of Right-Wing 'Discipline' Guides

Beating Babies in the Name of Jesus? The Shady World of Right-Wing 'Discipline' Guides: "There is a brutal movement in America that legitimizes child abuse in the name of God.

There is a brutal movement in America that legitimizes child abuse in the name of God. Two stories recently converged to make us pay attention. Last week, a video went viral of a Texas judge brutally whipping his disabled daughter. And on Monday, the New York Times published a story about child deaths in homes that have embraced the teachings of To Train Up a Child, a book by Christian preacher Michael Pearl that advocates using a switch on children as young as six months old.

What many people may not realize is that in the evangelical alternative universe of the home school movement, tightly knit church communities and the following of a number of big-time leaders and authors, physical punishment of children has been glorified for years...."

Fahrenheit 451: Police Destroy Over 5,000 Books In OWS Raid

Fahrenheit 451: Police Destroy Over 5,000 Books In OWS Raid: "When police raided Liberty Plaza today, the more than 5,000 books in the park, everything from Shakespeare to Dickens to Fahrenheit 451 and Atlas Shrugged were destroyed.

A look at the contents of the Occupy Wall Street library reveals the patriotism behind this protest. During their early morning raid the NYPD destroyed copies of The Declaration of Independence, Democracy In America by Alexis de Toqueville, Common Sense by Thomas Paine, Notes On The State of Virginia by Thomas Jefferson, Profiles in Courage by John F. Kennedy, and A biography of George Washington.

For those who believe that the Occupy Wall Street protesters are a bunch of liberal, hippie communists consider that also among the books destroyed were copies of Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, The Overton Window by Glenn Beck, and Capitalism and Freedom by Milton Friedman, and Rawhide Rawhide down : the near assassination of Ronald Reagan by Del Quentin Wilber...."

The Pill: Not Just For Pregnancy Prevention

The Pill: Not Just For Pregnancy Prevention: "Well, here's another twist in the debate over whether birth control is an essential health benefit. More than 1.5 million American women use birth control pills for reasons other than preventing pregnancy, a new analysis finds.

The nonprofit Guttmacher Institute, using federal survey data from the National Survey of Family Growth, found that 14 percent of pill users said they were taking the medication for a purpose other than contraception.

The pill users include an estimated 762,000 women who've never had sex. Ninety-five percent of them cited reasons other than birth control for their use of the pill...."
