Did Senator Reid Screw Senate Dems?

Confronting the Malefactors

Confronting the Malefactors: "There’s something happening here. What it is ain’t exactly clear, but we may, at long last, be seeing the rise of a popular movement that, unlike the Tea Party, is angry at the right people.

When the Occupy Wall Street protests began three weeks ago, most news organizations were derisive if they deigned to mention the events at all. For example, nine days into the protests, National Public Radio had provided no coverage whatsoever.

It is, therefore, a testament to the passion of those involved that the protests not only continued but grew, eventually becoming too big to ignore. With unions and a growing number of Democrats now expressing at least qualified support for the protesters, Occupy Wall Street is starting to look like an important event that might even eventually be seen as a turning point...."

Tell Democrats to Stand Up for Progressive Principles

DEAR FELLOW DEMOCRATS:

Democrats get six seats on the committee charged with cutting our deficit. And those Democrats should speak with one voice when it comes to these three progressive principles.

1. MEDICARE
We believe that any solution that ends Medicare as we know it–by slashing benefits or turning it into a voucher program–is no solution at all, and we will oppose it.

2. SOCIAL SECURITY
We believe that Social Security is a promise that must be kept. It provides economic security to millions of vulnerable Americans, did not cause the budget problem, and should not be cut as part of the solution.

3. SHARED SACRIFICE
We believe that we all must share the sacrifice–and that includes big corporations and the wealthy.

Democrats believe in fiscal responsibility. But with Republicans attempting to ram their extreme agenda through by force, I urge you to stand firm in support of these uniting principles.

Republican Political Theology Turns Reality On its Head

Republican Political Theology Turns Reality On its Head: "It seems incredible that the Republicans can claim that our budget deficit crisis is the fault of Barack Obama. If you go back and look at the historical record, you will see that the administrations of Democratic presidents increased the debt less than Republican presidents. It is always the Republicans who are the spenders. This is indisputable fact based on the numbers themselves.

It is also indisputable that the economy performs better (including GDP growth and employment) under Democratic administration. From 1948-2007, per capital GDP grew 2.8 percent under Democrats; it grew only 1.6% under Republicans.

It was Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush who swelled the size of government, not Democratic presidents – Bill Clinton shrank the size of government.

The debt ceiling has nothing to do with increased spending, only with the government being able to pay money it already owes.

These are all facts, facts the Republicans don’t want Americans to know...."

Mainstream Media Ignores S&P Attack On Republicans

Mainstream Media Ignores S&P Attack On Republicans: "Have you seen, anywhere, in any media, or even heard reported or repeated on NPR, the following sentence? “We have changed our assumption on this because the majority of Republicans in Congress continue to resist any measure that would raise revenues, a position we believe Congress reinforced by passing the act.”

It’s right there on Page 4 of the official Standard & Poors “Research Update” – the actual report on what they did and why – published on August 5th as the explanation for why they believe Congress – and even the Gang of Twelve – will be unable to actually deal with the US debt crisis..."

When Americans Asked For Bipartisanship The Republicans Said No

When Americans Asked For Bipartisanship The Republicans Said No: "In any country with a democratic-like government, there will always be partisanship despite the need for a unified approach to accomplish anything. It is human nature to have opposing viewpoints and it is beneficial to always consider different approaches to solve a problem because no one side or person can possibly anticipate every eventuality in reaching a goal. American politics are mired in partisanship and voters want both sides to work together to solve problems and move the country forward, but their pleas have been disregarded by Republicans who are not willing to compromise on anything. Indeed, Democrats have given up more to the GOP than their supporters like and despite making difficult concessions, the Republicans refused to budge and nearly sent the economy into a major depression..."

Fake Progressives

HIGH NOON: The Senate Will (Probably) End The Debt Ceiling Crisis At Midday

HIGH NOON: The Senate Will (Probably) End The Debt Ceiling Crisis At Midday: "If all goes well in Washington today, then shortly after noon the nation's debt ceiling crisis should be over. Around that time the Senate is due to take up last-minute legislation that the House passed Monday night.

Senate leaders seem confident they have at least the 60 necessary votes to carry the deal. If they're right, then the final bill would move swiftly to the President's desk for his signature. Once the ink is on the page, the the debt ceiling can be raised ahead of the nearing deadline, and the ticking timebomb of default will be defused.

It will be the end of a dangerous game of chicken that shook markets across the world as creditors faced up to the possibility that for the first time in its history America might fail to pay its credit obligations..."
