It's been that way for generations. Power and wealth are incredibly alluring, which is why the Bible has several ways of identifying false teachers.
Dominionists know this, which is why they are very careful to couch themselves as humble people or as victims (they've learned a lot from conservatives). In reality they're waiting until they have enough power to be unchallengeable.
