"If the United States is supposed to uphold "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" how can a sick or dying person without health care have these rights."

"Any health care funding plan that is just, equitable, civilized and humane must - must - redistribute wealth from the richer among us to the poorer and the less fortunate. Excellent healthcare is by definition re-distributional."

Inside The Sickness That Makes Republicans Hate Poor Children
Inside The Sickness That Makes Republicans Hate Poor Children: "The famous quote that says the degree of civilization of a society is measured by how it treats its weakest members was probably not referring to children because in most societies, it is a given that children must be treated well because they represent promise for the future. This is not limited to industrialized nations or advanced civilizations, but is a universal truth that parents understand and most humane people agree with. America is no different and any parent would agree that they would do anything to nurture their offspring to ensure a secure and content life. It is sad, but not all Americans hold children in the same regard and it is especially true if they are poor minority children...."
Why Is an Atheist High School Student Getting Vicious Death Threats?
Why Is an Atheist High School Student Getting Vicious Death Threats?: "Her state representative has called the student "evil" and she has been threatened with violence, rape and death. What gives?
If you take away just two things from the story about atheist high school student Jessica Ahlquist, and the court case she won last week to have a prayer banner taken out of her public school, let it be these:
1. The ruling in this case was entirely unsurprising. It is 100 percent in line with unambiguous legal precedent, established and re-established over many decades, exemplifying a basic principle of constitutional law.
2. As a result of this lawsuit, Jessica Ahlquist is now being bullied, ostracized and threatened with violence in her community. She has been called "evil" in public by her state representative, and is being targeted with multiple threats of violence, rape and death.
Which leads one to wonder: What the hell is going on here....?"

Florida GOP Considers Bill Which Would Allow Student Government To Vote For School Prayer Over Objection Of Religious Minorities
Florida GOP Considers Bill Which Would Allow Student Government To Vote For School Prayer Over Objection Of Religious Minorities: "School sponsored prayer has been unconstitutional for years. This is because a publicly funded school cannot put one religious group over another. It would alienate those who practice different religions or none at all. But a new bill in the Florida Senate would circumvent the Constitution by allowing student government to vote for the kind of school prayer they want over the objections of religious minorities.
According to the ACLU of Florida, Senate Bill 98 “would let school districts overrule the objections of religious minorities and organize school-sponsored prayer under the banner of student government. Under the bill, school officials would be able to skirt the Constitutional protections of religious liberty by letting students actually vote on what kind of prayers the school will allow and conduct...."

Suicide Threats and Strike Attempts at Apple Manufacturer: China's Workers Fighting for Rights at Work
Suicide Threats and Strike Attempts at Apple Manufacturer: China's Workers Fighting for Rights at Work: "Foxconn, a factory that makes iPhones and Xboxes among other gadgets, is seeing strikes by workers over low wages, long hours, and terrible conditions.
Last Friday, a riot erupted outside an Apple store in Beijing. It was widely reported that the rioters were hopeful shoppers who, having waited for hours in the freezing cold for the latest iPhone, were so furious when the launch was delayed that they threw eggs at the shop and clashed with the police. It turns out that many were actually migrant workers, hired by "scalpers" who intended to sell the gadget, a status symbol, for a higher price on the black market.
Meanwhile, a protest of another kind was just ending in Wuhan, in central China's Hubei province, thanks to the intervention of its mayor. Up to 200 workers from the Microsoft Xbox production line of Foxconn Technology, also a major supplier of Apple, had staged a strike. They were not demanding sleek new gadgets, but simply decent pay in return for making them, and proper compensation if being transferred. To drive their point home, they had threatened to kill themselves by jumping off a building...."

Kansas GOP House Speaker ‘Prays’ That Obama’s ‘Children Be Fatherless And His Wife A Widow’
Kansas GOP House Speaker ‘Prays’ That Obama’s ‘Children Be Fatherless And His Wife A Widow’: "ThinkProgress reported last week that Kansas House Speaker Mike O’Neal (R) was forced to apologize to First Lady Michelle Obama after forwarding an email to fellow lawmakers that called her “Mrs. YoMama” and compared her to the Grinch.
Earlier that same week, the Lawrence Journal-World was sent another email that O’Neal had forwarded to House Republicans that referred to President Obama and a Bible verse that says “Let his days be few” and calls for his children to be without a father and his wife to be widowed...."

Republican Sponsor Of Bill To Require Drug Testing For Georgia Welfare Recipients Arrested For DUI: "A Georgia Republican who wants all welfare reciepients subject to drug tests failed one himself after he ran a red light on Friday morning. The Atlanta Journal Constiution has the story on State Rep. Kip Smith (R):

Condemnation of Afghanistan video over the top, says Rick Perry: "Republican presidential hopeful said that marines purportedly shown urinating on corpses should not be prosecuted
The Republican presidential hopeful Rick Perry has accused the Obama administration of "over-the-top rhetoric" and "disdain for the military" with its condemnation of a video that purportedly shows four US marines urinating on corpses in Afghanistan.
Perry's comments also put him at odds with Senator John McCain, the top Republican on the Senate armed services committee.
Perry said the marines involved should be reprimanded but not prosecuted on criminal charges.
The Texas governor said on CNN's State of the Union programme: "Obviously, 18 and 19-year-old kids make stupid mistakes all too often. And that's what's occurred here...."

GOP Rep. Berates Student Concerned About Pell Grant Cuts, Tells Her To Join The Military: "To avoid a government shutdown at the end of 2011, Republicans succeeded in their campaign to cut the federal Pell Grant program by effectively kicking up to 100,000 low-income students off the rolls.
Last week, Arkansas constituent Kelly Eubanks, a college student who has two jobs and two children, confronted her Congressman, Rep. But instead of any explanation, Womack lashed out at Eubanks, telling her to pay her own way by “joining the military” like he did. After refusing to answer her question, he finally just asked her to “be quiet and listen.”..."

Do You Know Where Your Medicine Came From? Over 40% of Pills Made Overseas -- Many in Unregulated Factories
Do You Know Where Your Medicine Came From? Over 40% of Pills Made Overseas -- Many in Unregulated Factories: "Here's a look a look at where the stuff in your medicine cabinet comes from.
Headaches. Insomnia. Anxiety. American medicine cabinets are packed with remedies for these common maladies. And up to 40 percent of them are manufactured overseas (along with 80 percent of active ingredients for pharmaceuticals). But a recent report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office estimated that in fiscal year 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration visited just 11 percent of the 3,765 foreign factories it is responsible for inspecting — compared to 40 percent of domestic factories. In 2008, the GAO found that the FDA took two to five years to follow up with foreign plants it cited for safety issues — if it followed up at all.
In 2008, 30 products made by a single Indian company were banned by the FDA, and a tainted batch of the blood thinner heparin from one of many hundreds of Chinese pharmaceutical plants was linked to 81 U.S. deaths...."
