Suicide Threats and Strike Attempts at Apple Manufacturer: China's Workers Fighting for Rights at Work

Suicide Threats and Strike Attempts at Apple Manufacturer: China's Workers Fighting for Rights at Work: "Foxconn, a factory that makes iPhones and Xboxes among other gadgets, is seeing strikes by workers over low wages, long hours, and terrible conditions.

Last Friday, a riot erupted outside an Apple store in Beijing. It was widely reported that the rioters were hopeful shoppers who, having waited for hours in the freezing cold for the latest iPhone, were so furious when the launch was delayed that they threw eggs at the shop and clashed with the police. It turns out that many were actually migrant workers, hired by "scalpers" who intended to sell the gadget, a status symbol, for a higher price on the black market.

Meanwhile, a protest of another kind was just ending in Wuhan, in central China's Hubei province, thanks to the intervention of its mayor. Up to 200 workers from the Microsoft Xbox production line of Foxconn Technology, also a major supplier of Apple, had staged a strike. They were not demanding sleek new gadgets, but simply decent pay in return for making them, and proper compensation if being transferred. To drive their point home, they had threatened to kill themselves by jumping off a building...."

For women in business, the squeaky wheel doesn’t get the grease

For women in business, the squeaky wheel doesn’t get the grease: "The squeaky wheel gets the grease, as the saying goes. But is this true for women in business?

Our recent Catalyst report, The Myth of the Ideal Worker, reveals that women do ask for raises and promotions. They just don’t get as much in return.

The research focused on career paths of high-potential men and women, drawing on thousands of MBA graduates from top schools around the world. Catalyst found that, among those who had moved on from their first post-MBA job, there was no significant difference in the proportion of women and men who asked for increased compensation or a higher position.

Yet the rewards were different...."

The Secret To Creating Jobs That Wall Street Doesn't Want You To Know

Tea Party Nation Urges Businesses To Stop Hiring In Order To Hurt Obama

Tea Party Nation Urges Businesses To Stop Hiring In Order To Hurt Obama: "Tea Party Nation sent to their members today a message from activist Melissa Brookstone urging businesspeople to “not hire a single person” to protest the Obama administration’s supposed “war against business and my country.” Brookstone writes that business owners should stop hiring new employees in order to stand up to “this new dictator,” the “global Progressive socialist movement,” Hollywood, the media and Occupy Wall Street....."

The Job Killers

The Job Killers: "Among the many ritual ablutions a Republican presidential contender must perform is the signing of Grover Norquist's "Taxpayer Protection Pledge," a document the length and subtlety of a bumper sticker that commits politicians to oppose "any and all efforts to increase taxes." To date, all the GOP hopefuls, save Jon Huntsman, have signed on, as have 238 House members (99 percent of the GOP caucus), 41 senators, and more than 1,200 state legislators (PDF).

Norquist, a professional conservative and Washington salonista, drew up the pledge in 1986 at the behest of Ronald Reagan (who had signed a major federal tax increase a few years earlier, but never mind). It was part of the Republicans' nascent "starve the beast" campaign, which postulated that since cutting public services would always be unpopular, the way to shrink the government was to give it little more than hardtack. The movement erupted into full bloom in 2001, when Congress passed the Bush tax cut package; at the time, Norquist crowed: "I don't want to abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub."..."

Republicans Kick Their Obstruction Into Full Throttle In Order To Prevent Job Creation

Republicans Kick Their Obstruction Into Full Throttle In Order To Prevent Job Creation: "It is human nature to avoid accepting responsibility for making mistakes whether out of embarrassment or the need to blame another person to evade punishment or retribution. It is a sign of low moral character when adults blame someone else for their blunders, and children often engage in finger-pointing to avoid punishment. Rapists are well-known for blaming their victims to prevent juries from sending them to jail, and their lawyers often succeed in getting an acquittal because they portray the victim as a vindictive accuser. For the past ten years, Republicans have been raping America’s economy and avoided being accountable for their malfeasance; they have blamed President Obama, Democrats, and even Americans to deflect blame away from themselves...."

Debunking the Myth that Regulations on Big Business are "Job-Killers"

Debunking the Myth that Regulations on Big Business are "Job-Killers": "Experts say that no, regulations do not in fact destroy jobs--they shift jobs within the economy. So why do even Democrats repeat the Republican talking point?

It’s become a mantra on Capitol Hill and a rallying cry for industry groups: Get rid of the job-killing regulations. In recent days, with nearly every one of the GOP presidential candidates repeating that refrain, the political echo chamber has grown even louder. Earlier this month, President Obama also asked the Environmental Protection Agency to back off more stringent ozone regulations, citing the "importance of reducing regulatory burdens" during trying economic times.

But is the claim that regulation kills jobs true?..."

11 Reasons Why the Unemployment Crisis Is Even Worse Than You Think

11 Reasons Why the Unemployment Crisis Is Even Worse Than You Think: "Here are 11 unemployment facts that mass media underreport or ignore completely.

President Obama recently addressed the nation during a joint session of Congress and the main theme of that address was the need to create jobs, lots of jobs, millions of jobs. The Great Recession has cost US workers millions of jobs and those jobs have not come back as quickly as they disappeared and in many cases those jobs will never return. According to the Economic Policy Institute, “In total, there are 6.9 million fewer jobs today than there were in December 2007.”

That is only a small part of the jobs-hole story, a story that is often ignored, overlooked and oversimplified by mass media...."
